The Jay Robbins trained Tiznow won 5 of his 9 starts as a 3 year old enroute to winning the 2000 Breeders' Cup Classic from a game Giant's Causeway who wouldn't go down without a fight. Tiznow's win in the Classic had no doubt thrilled the crowd at Churchill Downs, but no one could have predicted what would happen a year later.
Tiznow started his four year old campaign with a win in the Grade 2 San Fernando Stakes at Santa Anita Park, where the colt remained for his next two starts, he finished second in the Grade 2 Strub Stakes and won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap.
Back issues kept him out of racing for 6 months, but to the joy of owner Cee's Stables and trainer Jay Robbins, the colt made a full recovery and resumed his campaign in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park, where he finished third.
Tiznow returned to his home track of Santa Anita Park, where he finished third in his final
prep for the Classic, the Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap, the race took place just 2 days before the September 11 Attacks, which not only shocked America, but the world at large.
No horse had ever won back to back Breeders' Cup Classics and Tiznow stepped onto the
track at Belmont Park with a chance to make racing history. The colt's task would not be
an easy one, the field included the likes of dual Derby winner Galileo, Arc winner Sakhee
and Jockey Gold Cup winner, Aptitude.
Tiznow had regular rider, Chris McCarron aboard. The pair sat third behind Orientate and
Albert The Great who set the early pace, Albert The Great took the lead and was in front
turning for home, when Arc winner Sakhee made his move. Tiznow and McCarron were
right behind them, McCarron and Tiznow found a gap between them and passed Albert
The Great, but Sakhee kept his head in front, Tiznow and Sakhee went stride for stride
in the final furlong, neither horse willing to give an inch of ground, but it was Tiznow
and Chris McCarron who prevailed, their victory was shorty followed by Tom Durkin's
call of "Tiznow wins it for America!" This was the 2001 NTRA Moment of the Year.
